Wave sailing is the jewel in the crown of windsurfing. It is dynamic and challenging, and just a whole lot of fun! In the real world, away from places of perfection such as Maui, the gear needs to be a little different. Mainly it needs to be bigger and faster to cope with the gnarly shore break, strong currents and fluky winds of the real world.
Finally, a board for the real world! Available by order only, the new Maui Malone's Wave 135.......
I designed this board to perform in the ocean in the real conditions that most coastal sailors face on a regular basis. From less than 10 knots and up to 20 this board will float you out through the gnarliest of breaks, and let you catch a ride and achieve the kind of turns that will have you hooting and hollering. This is a board that can turn those days of disappointment into days of glory. While it is ideal for light wind and small waves, it has been tested in winds of up to 20 knots and waves up to logo high. With its overall thin volume distribution, it is the closest feeling you will have to being on a surfboard while still having a sail to power you along!
With a three fin set up, you have amazing versatility in setting up the board for different conditions. My personal favorite is twin, with a smaller trailer fin. This gives a very tight turn, while maintaining some good grip. For larger waves, and stronger winds the thruster set up gives a more backfoot oriented ride.
Early planing is a hallmark of this design. This board can plane in around 12 knots with a 6.1 sail! Although I have set up the first board as a single back strap design, we can put forward straps on yours if you want them.
Handmade in the USA, we start with a CAD designed, CNC shaped EPS blank. Laminated with carbon and glass, it is plenty strong and still light weight. Also available in full sandwich construction. Certain aspects of the build can be custom tailored to your specific requirements, so contact me for details.

The latest version of the 135 is updated with a fish tail and shorter length. This board jumps onto a plane super early and with the shorter length is ideal for radical turns in small to medium waves. This one is set up as a paddleboard/windsurfer for real versatility. A single carry handle, twin locations for a leash, a simple rear grab line, and ultra comfy deck pad are all features on this one! Built of carbon/kevlar and 6 oz glass with a cork deck sandwich, this one is super tuff!
Action pics/videos as soon as the wind and waves return to South Florida!
Introducing my new brand, La Vida Custom. Don't just dream about life, live it!
This brand will not be limited, it will be the all encompassing outlet for my creativity. First you will see it's expression in the form of hand built water craft, but before long more wide ranging projects will find their way into the world!
Next up is a wave board for the windy days! Soon this one will be hitting the paint booth and will be revealed in all it's glory. 92 liters in volume with a full top and bottom cork sandwich, carbon and 6 oz glass construction. Designed on the computer, shaped by hand, intended for winds 15 and up with sails below 6 meters and for waves from chest high and above.
Now available a lightly used 2010 RRD 84 Thruster board. This is a super loose and still very quick board for ripping up the waves! Yours for only $900 ($2099 retail!).
The board is 253 x 54.5, it is 79 liters. An awesome fast wave rocker for down the line conditions, and sails below 5.5. A custom from 2000, shaped by Richard Greene for me. The same as the 2001 JP radical wave shapes with the beveled rail bottom design. The board is very light, only minor scratches. $299 each including a Vector Maui onshore fin.
